The greatest event celebrates by Germans (even bigger than Christmas celebration!!). It is a traditional festival that has two origins. The first is to chase away the winter, the second is the start of Lent. North Americans can identify it with Halloween in terms of costumes and candy, BUT it is on a much larger scale. Everyone is involved from the young to the young-at-heart.
Carnival started on 11 Nov every year and ends on February with various parades at housing areas and the grand parade at Cologne city. The parades are to celebrate liberation from each of the groups that held Cologne at one time or another. Prussians, Romans.. etc. During the parades, lots and lots of chocolates, flowers, and other gifts will be thrown out from the decorative vehicles to the people who gathered in all sorts of creative costumes.
