Klopp Castle is one of the oldest castles in the Middle Rhenish region. It was destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War, rebuilt in 1653, destroyed again in 1689, and blown up by the Mainz garrison in 1711 or 1713, shortly after its restoration, in order to render it worthless for the French enemy.

Klopp Castle was erected upon the foundations of a Roman fortress and in the Middle Ages was the seat of the bailiff of the Archbishop of Mainz. It was here that Emperor Henry IV was taken prisoner by his illegitimate son and subsequently forced to renounce the crown.

Niederwald Monument (also known as Germania, the guard over the Rhine), officially opened by the Kaiser of the time, Wilheim 1 (1870/71) and is a required schedule for any Rhinegau visit. Standing at Germania's feet, we can see the breathtaking view of the Rhine and Nahe Valley.
