I just couldn’t believe when I received an e-mail from a very old friend of mine, Shannon, telling me she just moved to Germany following her husband for 3 years posting here. What a coincidence…
She was my colleague when I worked at the University library to pay my telephone bills when I was in States 10 years back.
She planned to visit me in Cologne but it turns out that she got pregnant after 10 years of marriage 4 months ago. So, instead of her coming here, we went there to pay her a visit. She stays in Kaiserslautern, about 2++ hours drive from Cologne.
Sambil menyelam minum air, sempat lak menyimpang ke Trier (the oldest city in Germany) to see the Roman ruins that is still standing till today. Trier itself has nine structures which have been placed on the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage. Some that we managed to visit were Porta Nigra, Imperial Throne Room (Basilika), and Imperial Baths (Kaiserthermen).
| Quote: | Porta Nigra, City Gate
Largest survival Roman city gate worldwide. Massive sandstone blocks (up to 6 tons) held together not by mortar but by iron clamps embedded in lead. The name “Black Gate” dates from the Middle Ages (1060). |
| Quote: | Imperial Throne Room (Basilika)
Largest surviving single room from Antiquity; west wall and apse almost completely original. Built around 310, roofed over around 350; intriguing optical illusion underlining depth of perspective. Later archbishop’s palace, today Protestant Church. |
| Quote: | Imperial Baths (Kaiserthermen)
Built in the first quarter of the 4th century and later remodeled as imperial barracks, this structure is the second largest bath in Trier and the fifth largest in the Roman Empire. From west to east are sports ground, changing rooms, cold water bath, tepid room and hot water bath. |
